ODOT Bike/Pedestrian Advisory Committee
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation implemented a Bike/Ped Advisory Committee in early 2015. This group is made of advocates of cycling and walking. OBS is represented on this committee. Jessica Scott jscott@odot.org is the full time Bike/Ped Coordinator for ODOT.
Their last meeting was Feb. 3. Here are some highlights from the meeting.
Safe Routes to Schools. This is an organization to promote safety for kids as they commute to school. This includes kids who bike to school. This organization helps to fund programs to teach bike safety as well as funding grants to build sidewalks and bike trails to help kids get to school in a safe way.
Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) act. This is a program funded by the Federal government and managed by each state’s DOT. This is a new program that will start in 2017 and will provide funding for various transportation projects ( including bike trails and facilities ). This program will replace the current TAP program for awarding grants. If you wish to learn lots more about FAST, scroll to the bottom of this email for details.
Transportation Alternatives Program ( TAP ). This program, like it’s replacement FAST, gives money to communities to build improvements to cycling and walking facilities. This session they will distribute $4 million to non-urban communities, with a cap of $400K per project. They will also be funding Safe Routes to Schools projects state wide. Open Streets in OKC is April 3. It returns to the 23rd street corridor, plus adds a new connection to the Paseo district for even more fun. Last year OBS sponsored a Bike Rodeo for kids to learn and practice their bike skills. Click here for more: http://www.openstreetsokc.com/
